The Cross River State House of Assembly has pledged its preparedness to create legislation to back the functions of the Department of Public Transportation, DOPT, to make it more effective.
Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Marine Services, Rt Hon Ogbor Ogbor who led members of the Cimmittee on a courtesy call on the Director General of the department, Comrade Godwin Nyiam in his office on Monday made the disclosure
Hon Ogbor said the DOPT is a creation of government and must be allowed to perform its functions to meet the needs for which it was created.
"We know that most obstructions to the activities of DOPT are political but as an agency of government it must be allowed to perform its role. At your private time, send us the names of those who you observe are constituting the obstacle and we shall invite them". Hon Ogbor said
He said the law will define the functions of the DOPT as separate from those of Commercial Transport Regulatory Agency. CTRA, and also empower the department to ensure a complete stoppage to okada riding in Calabar.
The Committee Chairman also said the law will create revenue subheads for the department to enhance its efficiency.
DOPT Director General, Comrade Godwin Nyiam on his part appealed for assistance from the House of Assembly to remove the structures illegally erected at the Etim Edem park to create room for free flow of traffic in the park.
" There is an entry and exit at the park but presently you cannot access the park from the the Bedwell axis because structures that are not supposed to be there have been erected to block the way".
He said from the mandate given to the department by the governor Senator Ben Ayade, more effort are to be concentrated in Calabar while gradually moving to other towns in the state.
He said the traffic right erected at Ogoja to moderate traffic at the Okuku road/Mission road junction at Igoli is being flouted by motorists and efforts will be made to address the situation.
