The Paramount ruler of Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State, His Royal Majesty (HRM), Obol Lopon Ofem Ubana Eteng, has confirmed that only three persons died in a vehicle clash in a market in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking on Thursday, Obol Lopon lamented the accident which allegedly happened as a result of brake failure.

His words, “We are still on that incident; five persons are hospitalised and three dead. Of the dead, one is from Ugep that is an indigene while we don’t know the others, we don’t know where they are from but we are still investigating with a view to unravelling their identity,” he stated..

Saga Gist had reported about the accident, which claimed several lives, others injured and are receiving treatments while property worth several millions of naira were destroyed. 

“A Toyota Camry rammed into some shops in the market, leaving three persons dead on the spot while five others were allegedly hospitalised,” an eyewitness, Patrick Ofem

He added that the vehicle with no registration number was descending a hilly junction during the afternoon period of the day after a break failure and caused the worst havoc the community had ever witnessed.

“A Toyota vehicle descended from the nearest junction (Ediba junction) into the market which entered into people’s shops and destroyed properties and about 11 victims were recorded. Three of them died instantly, while the others were rushed to the hospital.”
