Cross River govt approves multi-billion naira emergency road projects across 10 LGAs

The Cross River State Executive Council has approved a wide-ranging set of emergency and strategic road infrastructure projects across several Local Government Areas in the state.

This was part of the resolutions reached at the 8th Executive Council Meeting for 2025, held on Wednesday, July 23, at the Governor’s Office Complex in Calabar.

The meeting was presided over by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, who stood in for the Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu.

Addressing council members, Odey emphasised the need for renewed commitment to service delivery and lauded the administration’s “People First” agenda.

Top among the resolutions was the approval for emergency repairs on critical portions of the Calabar-Ikom Highway, specifically along the Awi-Uyanga-Okomita corridor, to ease the burden of commuters from the northern and central parts of the state, as well as neighbouring eastern states.

In addition, the Council approved the phased execution of several road construction and rehabilitation projects to be handled by six construction firms. The first phase includes: 25km stretch of the Mfom-Okpoma Road in Yala LGA and 10km Ndok Junction-Mbube-Okubushuyu Road in Ogoja LGA.

The second phase features key infrastructure upgrades such as: Completion of the Boki East-West Road, construction of John Okpa Road in Obubra LGA, Obot Oko and Adiabo-Akani Obio Ukpahata Roads in Odukpani LGA, multiple roads in Calabar Metropolis, including Efa Street, Esuk Atu Avenue, Oma Street, and God’s Heritage – Prof Francis Bassey Crescent.

Additionally, the Uyanga-Ifumkpa Road in Akamkpa LGA will undergo channelisation work around the Governor’s Office to prevent flooding, and the maintenance of internal roads at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) Calabar Campus.

The Executive Council also approved emergency remediation works at erosion-threatened sections around the Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort and interventions on three short roads in Ekorinim II.

According to the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, the state is prioritising road infrastructure to enhance connectivity, promote economic activities, and support the social wellbeing of citizens.

“This government is committed to putting people first through strategic investments in infrastructure that directly impact everyday lives,” he stated.

The council also approved additional initiatives, including healthcare facility upgrades, educational reforms, and economic empowerment programmes all geared toward comprehensive development across the state.
