We’ve just come through one of the most challenging years as young people. 2024 took a lot from us. Many of us lost loved ones, others passed away due to poverty or an inability to afford medications. We went hungry. We walked long distances to save on transportation costs. Power outages were constant, and using firewood for cooking stopped being occasional and became part of our daily routine. We watched companies leave Nigeria, a huge number of young people left the country, rents skyrocketed, and many were laid off from their jobs. Depression took hold of many, and tragically, some lost their lives to suicide and mental health struggles. As young Nigerians, we’ve faced enough hardships to make anyone want to give up.
Personally, it was one of the hardest years I’ve faced. I turned 30, and with that came tough life realities, especially as a woman in a society that often leaves us feeling disadvantaged. I spent a lot of time journaling, crying, and praying—even on the days when I had no words to say. But through it all, I clung to one phrase: “Don’t give up.” Even on the days I could barely believe it, I held on.
In a year filled with chaos, one thing stood out: my journey, my story— which is God's story in the earth by the way. That teenage girl who embraced entrepreneurship, unsure of where it would lead her, has now become a force for change—slowly reshaping narratives and inspiring others. I still don’t have everything figured out, but I believe God prefers it that way, so we learn to trust in His plan, which is far beyond ours.
My book sold 2,000 hard copies, and even though it took over five years to reach that milestone, it proves that when we embrace authenticity, and lean more into our true selves, we can make a lasting impact in the world. Now is the time! It’s time to get real, to lean into our authentic selves, to acquire more digital skills that can boost our earning potential. Crying helps, but it isn’t the solution. Opinions is cheap, but they don’t put food on the table. To make real change, we must roll up our sleeves. As young people, we have work to do.
As I always say, “If it has to be, it’s up to us.” Let’s keep going!
