18th August: One of the biggest festivals in Sub Saharan Africa, The Boki New Yam Festival

The people of Boki are a sub-Bantu group whose origin is traceable to South Africa. The Bokis are believed to have migrated through Central Africa to Cameroon and later Nigeria. They are found both in Cameroon and Nigeria. In Cameroon, they are found in many division of South West Province while in Nigeria they are found in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State. 

Boki Local Government Area lies within the tropical rainforest zone and is blessed with abundant forest resources. 

Boki Local Government Area is made up of eleven (11) political wards. Agreeable, the eleven (11) political wards of Boki LGA celebrate their New Yam Festival same date (18th August yearly), making it a unique day for residents of Boki LGA. 

Applicable to Festivals in Africa and Sub Saharan Africa, like The AfrikaBurn Festival in South Africa, Fes Festival in Morocco, Bushfire Festival in Swaziland, Sauti Za Busara Festival in Tanzania, Lake of Stars Festival in Malawi, International Festival of the Sahara in Tunisia, Homomowo Festival in Ghana, Eyo Festival in South West Nigeria, The Igbo New Yam Festival (Emume Iwaji Iri Ohuru) in South East Nigeria, Durbar Festival in Northern part of Nigeria and the Ama-Ikiye Festival in Ijaw South-South Nigeria. The Boki New Yam Festival is a colourful and fashionable event, through the use of artifacts, cultural and ancestral history is told by the chief custodian of Boki history during Boki New Yam Festival. 

Harvesting.. From today 16th August 2021, farmers will be smiling to their farms to harvest new yams. Significantly therefore, majority of farmers always do harvesting of yams on the Eve of New Yam Festival.. On the "D Day" morning, the best yams in term of quality sizes are selected by farmers to the village square for a competition of a prospective winner for farmer of the year.
