Since the outbreak of the novel CoronaVirus, the democratic process to install a truly people elected local government Chairmen and Councillors across the 18 local governments of Cross River State has been stalled but with the INEC position to continue all electioneering processes across the country, the Cross River Independent Electoral Commission CROSIEC has just announced the continuation of the local government elections and fixed Saturday, May 30th, 2020 as the due day.
Prior to the lockdown, YNN, the foremost youth movement with presence across the country and strong presence in Cross River State had been approved to observe the election, an approval which still stands.
The group has set up all necessary arrangements with members and Volunteers across all 18 local government areas.
The Deputy National Coordinator for South South, who is the Chief Election Observer, Prince Otu Arikpo, hinted, “we have long awaited a time as this when the people will be given the chance to exercise their electoral franchise to vote and usher in the right candidate of their choice. This has not been the case for a while within the state. YNN is set to follow the international standard of electoral monitoring and shall see that the process is monitored to be free and fair”.
The Commission has promised to abide by the required social distancing order and ensure the safety and well-being of all electorates and electoral staff.
