As part of activities marking the 2019 world refugee day, the wife of the state governor Dr. Linda Ayade has held a press briefing with a cross section of journalists in her office in calabar.

Briefing newsmen, the wife of the Governor, Dr. Linda Ayade said, the essence of the celebration of the World Refugee Day in the state is part of efforts to eliminate all the horrific violence that has led to the displacement of people in various countries and communities thereby causing the formation of refugees in our society.
In Dr. Ayade's words, "Refugees must not be seen as burdens but rather as survivors who can contribute to the vibrancy of life in the communities and countries that shelter them". She also highlighted the contributions of the state government in the area of security and land for shelter and commended the United Nations high Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR, with whom her NGO – the Mediatrix Development Foundation, MDF, has maintained a rewarding partnership.
In his remarks the representative of UNHCR, Mr. Mulugeta Zewdie, said their intervention programme operates in Nigeria covering the eastern and the western parts of the country, saying the aim is to ensure that the refugees are properly supported and sheltered with efforts and partnership from UNFPA, Mediatrix Development Foundation as well as United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees being the leading team.

Also speaking, the Acting Director-General of SEMA, Mr. Ayim Princewill, said the role of SEMA in those refugee camps is to coordinate and manage the refugees' settlement and frowned at a situation where non-refugees enter into the settlement areas to ask for items meant for the displaced people. He called on the state government to beef up security in the refugee camps.

The event closed with a symbolic signing of commitment by the First Lady, UNHCR, Ministry of Health, SEMA, MIDC, among others.
