[Poetry] Cassava Deserves A Celebration - By Promise Binang

Queen Promise Binang is from Boki local government in Cross River State, the latest winner of the Pride of Nigeria Pageant 2018. She drafted a poetry on the importance of Cassava and reasons it should be celebrated in Nigeria. 

Although few tribes are trying to adopt the idea of celebrating Cassava, like the Eastern Boki People of Cross River State, Nigeria. The  issue has always been a disputed issue as several States/Communities are yet to adopt the cassava festival practice.

Another striking issue about the cassava celebration is that, few people trying to celebrate it have no fixed date for the celebration, as they all have different dates of celebrating it. 

Binang's brief write-up tends to highlight some little but essential importance of Cassava and why Nigerians must celebrate it.

Cassava is the starchy tuberous root of a tropical tree, used as food in tropical countries also known as manihot esculenta. 

Cassava is very essential in Nigeria food industry as many of our food is derived from it, such food as, Garri, Fufu, Amala , Abacha, bread (agege bread).

Cassava in dietary supplement form is said to have offer a variety of health benefits including enhanced fertility, prevention of cancer, and treatments of Arthritis, conjunctivitis, diarrhea and headaches.

Cassava serves also as detergent such as starch,stain remover etc

Cassava has been as a source of income, livelihood to many of us today, it has done so many good things to both the poor and wealthy. So therefore, Cassava deserve a date to be celebrated just as we celebrate the New yam festival in Nigeria.

Let us as Nigerians make a way to celebrate our cassava festival, because God has blessed us richly  with it!
