Cross River and Boki born international freelance Journalist and Founder NewsWireNGR, Mercy ABANG has been officially nominated to receive an award for the Woman of the Year in the “Journalism” category alongside Bella Naija, Linda Ikeji and  other Nigerian Journalists.

Mercy was nominated during an open vote system to the public put through by organisers as a result of her resilience in telling Untold Stories across the various Nigerian communities and the continent of Africa.

Mercy was in 2017 awarded by the Cross River State Government as part of its 50th anniversary to mark the creation of the state as the 50 Young People to Watch.

 Mercy’s work is focused on never reported stories mostly ignored by mainstream media organisations in Nigeria and across the African Continent – she has passionately self-funded stories published by more than 20 media organisations across. Mercy is the 2017 United Nations Journalism Fellow and also the 2017 BudgIT media fellow.

The Boki born Journalist has filed stories from the hinterlands of Maiduguri, the Borno State Capital to the Bundestag (The German Parliament) in Berlin. She travels across the world telling stories.

She has written extensively on major topics from technology to security, environment, poverty, maternal health, corruption, civic space, extractive industry, budget tracking to social Justice and human right.

Her Network Woman of the Year Awards is designed to publicly celebrate and honour outstanding women in diverse industries who manifest admirable zeal in their industry, identified by their ability to positively affect lives by changing the narrative through their work and leaving a legacy for future generations.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, 8 November 2017 via a live Instagram coverage anchored by a selection of notable women in diverse sectors; these women are Jane Michael Ekanem (Fashion Designer/Stylist, Arit Okpo (Media Entrepreneur), Glory Edozien (Founder of Inspired by Glory Academy), Shade Ladipo (Country Director WeConnect International Nigeria) and Nkem Onwudiwe (Founder of the Her Network Platform).
