Boki (/bɒki/Boki languageBokyi) is a Local Government Area in the Cross River State of Nigeria. It was created on 28 August 1991, and its capital is Boje. The region has a contiguous border with the Republic of Cameroon and is known internationally as a commercial centre for agricultural commodities such as cocoacoffeetimber, and palm products.
The origin of its name comes from the native tribe (Boki people) with the same that resides in the area. The term originates from the word Bokyi, which is the name of the tribe in the Boki language although it is also referred to as Nki.
Boki is a landlocked Local Government Area of Nigeria (LGA) bounded by the Republic of Cameroon to the east as well as five other Cross River State LGA's: Obudu and Obanliku in the north, Ikom and Ogoja in the West, and Etung to the south.
The region is considered to have some of the most rugged terrain in Nigeria, for it is almost completely covered by the Cross River Rainforest (one of the last remaining in the country) and the Afi mountain range (60% of which is inaccessible to vehicles throughout the year).
LOCATION AND ENVIRONMENT OF THE BOKI PEOPLE:
The Boki people are found within the upper Cross River region, occupying the tinge of equatorial rain forest area, which lies between Takamanda National Park of Cameroun and the East of Cross River National Park, Okwangwo Division in Nigeria.
Boki is bounded to the northwest by Ogoja and Bekwarra Local Government Areas; to the northeast by Obudu and Obanliku and to the south by Ikom and Etung Local Government Areas respectively.
The location of Boki is very unique, from the north to the south, Boki area covers an average of hundred kilometers, with a block of hilly rainforest zone, which stretches north-east from around the Bansara boundary with Ntamante down to Ogoja, then eastwards to the boundary between Obudu and Irruan, forming the northern limit of the forest in the area. On the east, there is the Boshi-Balegate mountain, and series of rivers, which includes; ‘Afi’ river, ‘Okoon’ River, ‘Afriek’ river, etc. flowing southwards to the Cross River.
Boki Local Government Area is one of the eighteen local governments of Cross River State, The population of the Boki people, according to the 2006 census figure, is one hundred and eighty-six thousand, six hundred and eleven (186,611). Boki has two State constituencies, Boki 1 and Boki 2, at the State Assembly and eleven political wards, and 108 communities which are;

The district has many settlements including:The area is also prone to mudslides due to frequent high levels of rainfall. In July 2014, mudslides swept away bridges which isolated many communities including the region's capitol, Boje.
