Kenyan Human Rights Activist Mwangi Announces Presidential Bid

Renowned human rights actvist Bonifce Mwangi has announced his intention to seek the Kenyan Presidency during the 2027 polls, adding to a growing list of aspirants.

Adressing a crowd of mostly young people in Nairobi, the photojournalist turned activist spoke of his vision of a "kinder nation", as he denounced police repression of opposition protests: "... every time we go to the streets, they push us back. They call us paid activists. They call us hooligans. They call us terrorists. But we're not. We're all parachutes."

Mwangi's entry into the race now casts him against Kenya's wealthy politicians, but he said his hopes rest in the "conviction" of Kenya's growing youthful population, who have been at the forefront of protests against the government of William Ruto.

Mwangi was arrested last month on terrorism charges for his alleged role in anti-government protests.
