Cross River gov’s wife empowers 500 street sweepers

The First Lady of Cross River State, Bishop Eyoanwan Otu, has empowered 500 Street sweepers working under the Calabar Urban Development Authority, CUDA, within Calabar metropolis in a bid to appreciate their sacrifices and commitment in keeping the state capital clean.

At the empowerment ceremony on Tuesday in Calabar, Bishop Otu commended them, stating that “they are important in the scheme of things and government thinks highly of them.”

She said “We are here to celebrate you because you deserve to be celebrated. Year in and out, you are on the streets, sweeping in and out, in season and out of season, even during bad weather and at odd hours.”

“Your sacrifices are not unrecognised. We have seen your efforts and that is why we are here to say we love you and there is dignity in labour”, she stated.

“Everybody is important, and what they do is also relevant. You are recognised, and I also want to let you know the governor thinks highly of you”, she said.

As part of the event, the governor’s wife also presented bags of rice to all the women as well as cash to them.

30 diligent women were also specially empowered with Point of Sales Machines POS, and an additional cash as a startup to enable them to augment their income.

The Executive Secretary of CUDA, Ayi Etim, described the reception as a major morale booster for the workforce, saying the recognition will lift the spirit of the women.

As part of the event, Mikki Odionka, a talented artist who recently made it to the finals of the Nigerian Idol competition, received a brand new car and a cash gift from the First Lady.
