Retirees of the Nigeria Police Force has on Thursday, April 29, 2021, took to the Cross River State command, Diamond Hill, Calabar to protest against the way the Federal Government is treating them.

The association of retired police officers bitterly lamented over the ill-treatment meted on them by the federal government after their 35 years servitude to the country – after several calls for restructuring of their retirement benefits which has duly deprived them of equal rights just like other security agencies went on deaf ears.

A cross-section of the protesters who ditched the cold on Thursday morning to drive their demands in front of the Police Force Headquarters’ gate, Calabar spoke extensively on the shabby treatment they have received since they retired from active service with a bulk of them going through agony and distress just to cater for their families.

While speaking through their spokesman, SP Iwara Ibiang (retd.) decried the terrible treatment they receive from the government after retirement even when they served the nation meticulously.

He said: “After 35 years I was given less than N2.5m as a gratuity with a monthly pension of less than N40,000 with also an ASP taking home monthly pension pay of N22,000 after waiting for more than a year to get that meagre pay. We also want to exit from the pension scheme which has cheated the ex-personnel on their retirement benefits”.

He further stressed that widows of ex-policemen who died in active service most of them haven’t received a dime after several years. He raised concerns about the housing scheme which he labelled as a “Scam” and called for its abolishment.

The ex-policemen appealed to the government to come to their aid after putting in 35 years in service without having anything tangible as a fall back for survival.

The Police Retirees were carrying placards with the following messages: “ASP lumpsum N1.2 million after 35 years, monthly pension, N22,000. Wetin Police do FGN (Federal Government of Nigeria)?”, “Oga President, NASS (National Assembly) help us”, ” FGN pay Police Retirees debarment allowance”.

Others are “Lumpsum and monthly pension paid: Police Retirees – a transport to the grave”, IGP (Inspector-General of Police) refund our FOKAS money”, ” Contributory Pension Scheme is a death sentence against Police Retirees”, “Federal Mortgage Bank stop keeping our National Housing contributions five years after retirement”, “The labour of our heroes past is now in vain” and several others.
