Following the stalemated negotiation between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU), the union on Monday embarked on an indefinite strike.
The industrial action comes amid efforts by the Federal Government to contain the spread of the deadly Coronavirus, which led to the closure of tertiary institutions in the country by the federal ministry of education.
ASUU President, Biodun Ogunyemi, announced the commencement of the strike at a press briefing in the union’s National Secretariat in Abuja.
The union had on Monday, March 9, 2020, declared a two-week warning strike because of the Federal Government’s inability to pay salaries of lecturers who are not enrolled in the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System and the non-implementation of the 2009 agreement, among other issues.
