Member representing Boki 1 constituency in the Cross River House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dr. Itam Abang on Saturday, 19th October 2019 held her first Town Hall Meeting to formally commence the fulfillment of her 2019 elections campaign theme of raising the bar of Legislation and representation through a democratic dialog in the constituency.

The interactive Town Hall Meeting had Constituents from across the five Wards duly represented in a fairly distributed attendance carefully drawn from the constituency. The gathering was attended by Traditional Rulers, Political Elites, Community Opinion Leaders, Women from the five Wards, Youth Leaders, Civil Society Organizations, National Youth Service Corps Members and the Security apparatus in the constituency.

The Rt. Honorable began by giving  stewardship account of her first tenure, making special mention of her strides in employment of constituents in the education and health sectors, her quick responses to community calls through subventions and physical projects, her support for students, her empowerment and championing of women inclusiveness in governance and politics, and of note her overwhelming contributions in the Floor of the 8th Assembly. This meeting fostered constituents’ assessment and evaluation of her representation in the past four years and of course, reckoned with the challenges that stood in the way of actualizing some of  the efforts of the honorable member toward creating more social and community based values for the time under review.

It can be recalled that, Rt. Hon, Dr. Itam Abang in the opening plenary session of the 9th Cross River State House of Assembly has sponsored two Motions, one of which was greeted with wide accolades and commendations by Cross Riverians the world over. She has supported yet a handful of motions in the wake of this Assembly and was appointed Chairman, House Committee on Education and Vice Chairman, House Committee on Water Resources and Sanitation. She is also a member of several other Committees including health.

The theme of the Town Hall “CONSOLIDATING DEMOCRACY AND RULE OF LAW “ was justifiably delivered upon in the proceedings of the meeting as Members in attendance raised questions, suggestions, appeals and hopes in the health, education, employment, community water projects, accessible roads, consideration for Appointments and economic support. Appeal for government to build some inland roads for remote communities like Abo Mkpang/Bashu road, Botatong Road, Bebo/BBumaji road, completion of Danare road and Orimekpang Inland road was solicited for. Other constituents appealed for Primary and Secondary school Blocs to be innovated in Bashua Danare and Okwa/Okwangwo. Others appealed for gainful employment and agro support.

NYSC members ably represented by the president of the corps in Boki 1 constituency solicited to the Honorable Member for assistance with lodgings for NYSC Members in the constituency.

Responding to the issues raised above, Rt. Hon, Dr. Itam Abang expressed delight in her people’s openness with regards to all the needs begging for attention. She was diplomatic in expressing the sincerity of her thoughts on the needs that can be attended to in the short term and those that may have to wait a little longer. The lawmaker was full of positivity and believes that His Excellency, the Digital Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Prof, Ben Ayade will hearken to the appeals of her people when she channels their needs to him, and promised to do her best in finding solutions to the constituency’s needs. She assured that, all the requests are doable when the State recovers from its revenue loss that almost collapse the economy some years ago.

Goodwill messages where entertained from constituency Stalwarts and Monarchs present who thanked  their representative for her effort in placing Youths and  women in different jobs, for responding quickly when called, and for bringing the biting conditions of the constituency to government. They prayed for more success in all her effort to help the people in whatever way possible.

The Program Coordinator, Noble Organization For Solidarity Development (NOSD), Mr. Noyi Ofem who anchored the meeting expressed his gratitude for the turn out of invitees to  this meeting and thanked the people for their enormous cooperation to the overall success of the purpose for the gathering.

Rt. Hon, Dr. Itam Abang is now the 2nd Member of the Cross River State 9th Assembly to hold a town Hall meeting in their constituency after Hon. Dr. Davies Etta of Abi State constituency, and has become the 1st female lawmaker to do so in this Assembly. It is on record that this Town Hall Meeting preceded the last three held in the First tenure of Rt. Hon, Dr. Itam Abang making it the fourth time the Honorable Member has called for an official round table discourse with communities in her constituency.

According to her, “this democratic  milestone of a successful town hall meeting shall be followed by other human, social and economic dividends to come by God’s grace”.

The over One hundred invited and non invited guests in attendance where served with launch, drinks and transportation.
