The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on Tuesday met with the Federal Government as it seeks to further support smallholder farmers in Nigeria.
Officials of the foundation, who were at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development stated that the organisation sought to explore areas of mutual cooperation with Nigeria as regards economic opportunities for smallholder farmers.
The leader of the delegation and the foundation’s Deputy Director, Agricultural Development, Tom Kehoe, explained that the organisation would support the Federal Government’s efforts in creating a business climate to attract private sector investments and produce innovations that would enable farmers adapt to climate change.
He was quoted in a statement issued by the FMARD as saying, “Our investments are backing efforts to develop disease-resistant varieties that are more nutritious and can be easily processed to meet demands.”
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sabo Nanono, called for proper agricultural research in order to enable Nigerian farmers deliver good produce.
