George Odok

The 2019 electioneering period was so tensed, the contest was tough, the politicians were fearless, party supporters were dogged, analyst predicted a shift in power, journalists foresaw a clash of the bigwigs and the electoral umpire made the final decision.

The political positions were keenly contested, the candidates were popular and this helped to shape the contest which directly gave the electorates a window for an option. For those who won, they will tell you it wasn't an easy contest because the period were a candidate wins a popular party ticket and goes to bed because he or she can predict the outcome of the election is eroding away.

In all of these, winners have emerged and life has continued. Some of those who lost have since congratulated their opponents in the spirit of sportsmanship. But, it is worrisome that some supporters of those who emerged victorious have failed to build on the VICTORY OF INCLUSIVENESS, rather, some have chosen the way of derogatory verbs to further injure those they won.

Sadly, some of these supporters have failed to understand that ELECTION IS NOT WAR, and thus, a winner must emerge. For those who lost and are convinced that they won in the field but were rigged out at the collation point, the court will decide.

The sweetness of victory is in defeating the opposition. When you defeat your opponent in a keenly contested election, your story of victory will be better told and appreciated. That is why, no one contest an election against his/herself.

Politics is better played as a game. It shouldn't be an occupation. Those who took politics as an occupation and as a career "usually" fall in their loudest ovation.

Elections have come and gone. It's time to build on the positives and learn from the negative experiences. All forms of confrontation and mockery shouldn't be part of celebrating an election victory.

Don't build more enemies while supporting an individual. Interestingly, politicians who are worst enemies today can become best of friends tomorrow when their interest tally. Don't increase your arrows, always thread with caution. In an election period, always do your criticism and leave some window for reconciliation.

Those who lost election needs time to heal and recover. They spent resources, they lost energy, in some cases, they lost their supporters during the electioneering, hence, they shouldn't be any form of mockery, verbal or written attacks on them. Imagine if your team had lost as well; so rejoice, don't incite provocation, be friendly!

The period of post election attacks, confrontations and abuses should be over. Be thankful that your team got the victory amidst challenges.

Don't run down anyone for losing an election. It was a contest in ideas, not a clash of political personalities.

Let us all work hard to build legacies that endears to beautiful history and for the development of our country; only then will the creed in our national anthem ring true:
"To build a nation where Peace and Justice shall reign".

The time to make peace and move forward is now.
