In my place, I am told that,  a suitor must first go to know my family, make his intentions known to them and seek their permission to approach me about it. My acceptance sets the pace for courtship and further preparations for marriage and my refusal ends the interest. Unlike the days of old, my family have no influence in my choice suitor,  thanks to modernisation. But, they must all go through this channel. A suitor may persuade and I may reconsider or give up and we move on.

Comparatively, in my opinion, I think we have abused this tradition which is way much better than what we call contemporary culture of courtship. Without regards to our parents we go into relationships unscrupulously, with no direction, commitment, respect or seriousness and indulge in all forms of immoral adventures then alas, we come out exhausted and heart broken sometimes with child(ren).

Shouldn't we revive and refine our traditional values that are gradually at the corridor of extinction? That places value on the integrity of the girl child and her Parents? A traditional that compels patents to groom their children well?

Even in Christiandom, faithfuls of organised doctrines approach the Church superiors to register their intentions for a  sister before even speaking with her. No one will compel her to agree but he must fulfil this righteousness to seek and get permission to do so. I see it as honourable and responsible for a well brought up man and dignifying to the woman.

I am from a home and a place with a beautiful tradition. With this post, I am commencing a sensitisation of Boki youths as Charity begins at home. Our generation is getting it all wrong  because we know NOTHING, not even the Western culture we have so embraced. Let us stop beer parlour,  shawarma and indomie tradition. They are destroying us. They have destroyed many homes.

Our dialect, our food, our harmless practices that promotes unity and development must be revived and refined. It begins with you and I.

I am MODLIN ODU, a proper Boki maiden.
